I knew a Venus once. She was a tiny, plain, very old lady who had never married. I'm not sure what her career was, but she ruled the local Scrabble club with a rod of iron and was intensely competitive.

Venere doesn't work for me at all. Too close to the beginning of 'venereal' as in disease, and also to the beginning of 'venerable' though of course the word derivation is different.
