shveta is cognate with and means white. shvetA is the feminine form.
The -v- is the standard transliteration, but the sound is unaspirated labio-dental, IPA [ʃʋe:t̪α:], more like w. The sound changes depending on the modern Indian language being referred to, thus in Bengali, the -v- disappears in this context.
