One hot summer evening in 2017, Amber, Jade, and Opal got together in their parents’ garden to drink lemonade and chat about each other’s lives.
“How are you holding up, Amber?” Jade asked her older sister as they sipped their lemonade and ate some cantaloupe.
“It’s been a rollercoaster,” the oldest triplet admitted, “but thankfully Ian is making it all better!”
Amber had run into Ian, an old childhood friend, at the grocery store. He had come back to town after returning from the Army, and surprisingly they’d both remembered each other. After they finished their shopping, Amber and Ian had made a catch-up date, where Amber had admitted her crush on him from eighth grade.
“We’re so happy to hear that!” Opal commented. “By the way, you never told us how your date went! Is he as hot as you remembered?”
“He is! We still have a lot in common, but then one thing led to another…” Amber let her voice trail off, but Jade could already sense something was up.
“What, did he get you pregnant?”
A smile crept up on Amber’s face, and her sisters squealed in excitement.
“You’re kidding me!” Jade said. “I was about to tell y’all the same thing!”
“Oh, my gracious! How’d you manage that?” Amber asked.
Jade told the sisters about how she met a guy named Emilio at a pub in Barcelona, and how she went home with him, woke up in bed next to him, and found herself pregnant a month later.
“Do you still talk to him?” Amber asked.
Jade shrugged. “Not really…distance and all that, y’know? But I’m determined to keep this baby and raise it, even if it’s not with Emilio.” It was then that Jade noticed a distressed look on Opal’s face. “What’s wrong?”
Opal silently handed Jade her positive pregnancy test. “I’m pregnant, and I’m not even ready!” She burst into tears, and the oldest sister comforted her.
“Opie, it’ll be fine!” Amber consoled. “That’s what Grayson’s there for!”
Grayson was Opal’s boyfriend, the first guy in a very long time who could actually make her happy. They’d met when he became a customer of hers, Grayson always complimenting Opal on her work. Things moved along swiftly in the relationship, and before they knew it, Opal and Grayson couldn’t keep their hands off each other. Opal was in euphoria…until that one day, when she took her first pregnancy test.
“How did he react?” Jade added.
“He’s happy for me…but I’m still scared. What if I screw up?”
“Everybody screws up sometimes! You’re only human, Opal.”
When the girls told their parents about the pregnancies, both of them were very happy and supportive of them.
Of the triplets, Amber was the only one pregnant with a boy; the other two had girls. All three babies were born within two weeks of each other: Dashiell Zane to Amber, Carmen Gianna to Jade, and Aspen Grace to Opal.
