However, Emilio and Angelica are worried about her, being unmarried with a child, and fear she only fell in love because Zenobia did. Aurelia begins to become interested in plants, especially those with medicinal properties. She begins a collection of interesting plants, which her parents humor. Angelica gives birth to yet another daughter, Isabetta. She is pleased, but Emilio is a bit disappointed as he wanted a boy, though he still adores the new baby.

The long awaited son, Alvise, is born, making Emilio very happy that he will have an heir.

The whole incident gives Angelica another play idea, though this one is less popular and ends up censored by the church for blasphemy. She is excommunicated, to her and Emilio’s amusement, though her family is scandalized.

The family acquires another dog, from a grateful patient of Chiara’s. Regina begins to daydream, and Angelica encourages her to turn her daydreams into stories. Zenobia meets an 19-year-old boy, Benedetto Viscia, who is an armorer. She falls hard for him. Emilio is upset about the age difference and her young age, but Angelica laughingly reminds him that they have an even bigger age difference and she was eighteen when they married.

Zenobia and Benedetto marry after Emilio relents. Zenobia gets a job as an actress, drawing on all the games she played in the garden with her siblings. She performs one of Angelica’s plays, pleasing her mother. Soon, she and Benedetto are thrilled to welcome identical twin boys, Daniele and Domenigo. However, her marriage upsets Aurelia, used to doing everything with her twin. Aurelia acquires her own love, Vittorio da Firenze, who is an aristocrat. Before they have the chance to marry, Aurelia gives birth to a daughter, causing scandal. Aurelia and Zenobia, however, are pleased to have had children at the same time, continuing to do everything together. Aurelia only wishes she had had twins too. However, Emilio and Angelica are worried about her, being unmarried with a child, and fear she only fell in love because Zenobia did. They hope Vittorio will marry her and her reputation will recover.

Vittorio and Aurelia get married, giving Aurelia a noble title and legitimizing their daughter Diana, as well as the child Aurelia is pregnant with during the wedding, a son named Marcello. Venice is once more excommunicated by the pope! When she hears, Angelica, who has already been excommunicated for writing a play mocking a mystic, bursts into hysterical laughter in front of her new in-laws, who point and whisper about the scandalous female playwright whose daughter is Venice’s first female surgeon. Zenobia acts in her mother’s most famous play. Chiara realizes that she is interested in women, not men, which her parents happily accept. Angelica and Emilio have led complicated lives, and a few more complications feel like nothing. They have faced tragedy and struggle, but ultimately they are happy. With grandchildren born and daughters following in their footsteps, they feel their lives have come full circle.
