I'm in the US. I have quite a few friends that go by Katie (late 20s, early 30s). Some of them are Katy or Kati or some other variation of it as well. For most of them, it is short for Katherine. I do have one friend whose legal fn is just Katie. I think if I had to call my daughter Katie, I'd name her Katharina just because I think it is a bit more interesting than Katherine.
