I think you're right! I think they're supposed to be pronounced differently with the different origins.
I understand it's not popular opinion to use traditionally gender names on opposite gender.
Jasper rings unisex nature name to me and I've known female Jaspers... especially in the context of being Canadian (Jasper National Park)
