I feel like this is the redneck form of
Rachel, similar to how
Mitch seems like the redneck
Michael to me. It's also similar to
Renee or
Jayden,
Cayden, etc and fillery like
Mae and
Rose.
It's okay. I like it a lot, considering I dislike several comparable names much more.
I agree that Rey (as in
Star Wars) looks like it'd be the most popular spelling in the US: it's more modern seeming than
Rae, more feminine than
Ray, less exclusively Asian seeming than
Rei. I was a little surprised it didn't rise more in popularity after
Star Wars came out. It's minimalist and unisex, with an ambiguous origin - seems on trend without being faddish.
But anyway! I prefer
Raina or
Raya or
Rhea.
