Could the Australian guy be from a Burmese background? The name "Thaw" is also a unisex Burmese name given for those born on a Friday. I am not sure if there is a meaning to the Burmese name "Thaw" though. You may have also heard of the late British actor John Thaw (although "Thaw" is used as a surname in that case).
