since when is puritan bad? all virtue names I think have puritan value in them.

Grace isn't Puritan.
And no, virtue names do not all have Puritan value in them and yes, Puritan is bad - they were horrible people who created the witch hunts and other atrocities. The Puritan Ideal is not something to be aspired to. Christian value, maybe...Puritan no. When I think of Puritan names I think of things like Prudence, Silence, Patience. While they are admirable qualities the ideas the Puritans had behind them were not.

What's not puritan about Grace? Is it that it has widespread modern usage? I am pretty sure it was a traditional puritan staple.
I don't exactly condone all things puritanical, but I don't think there's anything wrong with sharing names with them.

I'm taking this off of something Cleveland Kent Evans stated a while ago, so I'll search it out or call my dad. The history of the name Grace is very different from what we think of it as today.
And no...I don't think there is wrong with sharing names with them. My problem is more along the lines about assuming that every virtue name *is* Puritan or that the Puritans were something to be admired - they weren't. This comes from my own understanding, however, and is very much colored by Baptist history - we broke away from the Puritans because they were so brutal and violent and unwilling to accept any beliefs than their own. So I fully admit to having a very biased view of them. (And yes, there are two very different Baptist movements...the one I'm thinking of with the Puritans is more closely related to the Quaker movement)
