[Surname] Re: HUERECA
This is a puzzler. I thought it might derive from a place-name but I haven't found any so called.
It is said by some to be another version of Guereque, but that doesn't help much if true. The GUE of Guereque is pronounced GWE, not as in guerrero, and is marked accordingly in Spanish. One theory is that it is Basque in origin. No doubt there are others.

I agree with you this surname could come from place-names.
I have found another surname Huercal that comes fro a place-name.See the Diccionario Comparado De Los Apellidos.... of Gutierre Tibòn.

I came across this in looking for meaning of Guereca. Essentially the same name and I theorize that the "silent" G which isn't really silent if you speak Spanish well was replaced with the H at some point most likely through immigration/emigration. I can't find a meaning for Guerica either, however, I have 2 theories, one of which is that the "Guer" might be from the root word "Guerra" so could have something to do with being a warrior or something. Alternatively, there is a town in the Basque Region called Guernica and again, the G and the H are most likely from the same original name, so. If it relates to a town, you need only add the N and change the E to an I to get the name of a Basque city. Just some random thoughts as I too, was curious about this name.
