Thelonius casually mentioned one day that, since the elder children were betrothed, it might be time to find a husband for Isadora. As a result, scores of young suitors began turning up at castle Carimonde, drawn by tales of the princess's beauty and grace. Isadora was a fan of the attention more than anything else; she was still rather young, capricious and immature, content to have the princes and dukes and lords pay her gifts and compliments and then go along their ways.
However, the parade of suitors turned out to be a perfect opening for an assassin to slip through. An imposter claiming that he was a count from the east snuck into the king's study and tried to kill him. Luckily, Noam happened to see the struggle through the window and raced inside to save his father-in-law, though he wasn't in time to prevent the king from being beaten very badly and stabbed in the chest. Thelonius was severely weakened by his injuries, and the doctors wouldn't say whether or not he would survive them.
The twins were furious, and only Cornelius's intervention prevented them from mounting the assassin's head on a pike. He reminded his siblings that they would need to know who had sent the false count (though everyone suspected Selesin since they were still rather bitter about losing the war over a decade earlier). Knowing that their brother was right, Magda and Lucian had to settle for some vigorous interogation.
With his mother distraught and the twins murderous, Cornelius took over most of the day-to-day responsibilities of ruling the kingdom, and he promised that, as soon as they knew for sure who had attacked their father, Magda and Lucian could lead the army and raze that house, town, or country to the ground. The twins were grudgingly pleased with the arrangement, and Cornelius realized that he would pretty much always have to be the voice of reason for the pair. He didn't mind though, discovering once again that he enjoyed ruling and seemed to be pretty good at it.
Isadora blamed herself for her father's assault and injury, and ended up shrieking threats and insults at the next wave of suitors to arrive. Probably fearing that Isadora had turned out to be as dangerous as her legendary older sister, the young men fled the castle immediately. For weeks, the only person outside her family that the dark-haired princess would speak to was her music teacher, the youngest son of a disgraced baron from a country all the way on the other side of the world. Jourdain Alexis Gaspard Rosaire Toussaint was a talented musician and an even better teacher and confidant. Soft-spoken but intelligent and kind, Jourdain comforted Isadora and helped her work through her grief and guilt.
When word finally came from the doctor that Thelonius was expected to pull through, Isadora immediately found Jourdain and kissed him soundly. He was flustered but didn't stop blushing or smiling for the whole rest of the day. As soon as the king was well enough, Jourdain asked for the princess's hand, and Thelonius (knowing that his daughters had a way of getting exactly what they wanted) gave his blessing.
