[Opinions] Re: Adelaida
in reply to a message by mirfak
I pronounce it like Adelaide with an A at the end. I don't think there's any correct pronunciation for it. They EYE-da pr. might be the Spanish pr. but in the US there is no reason to use that pronunciation and most people would pronounce it with an AY-da ending. I mean we don't pronounce Hannah, Sarah or Nicole the original way so I don't see why I couldn't use an English pronunciation of Adelaida.

Sure most English speakers would probably guess it's Addle-ayda, but it's not a common English usage name and so there's no common English usage pronunciation except the "I guess it's Adelaide with an A on it" and that is why I do not like it (I think the A on the end looks non-English, since Adelaide is the usual English form - and so it seems much nicer to me if it is pronounced the foreign way). Hannah, Sarah, and Nicole are common English usages. That's why I'm making a distinction. To me, Adelaida pronounced Adelaide-a seems much like Jorge pronounced like George.
