[Opinions] Gus
I used to hate this name, but then it grew on me, like a wart. WDYT of Gus? Strictly nickname, or can it work on its own?

Well if I wasn't already associating it with the fat guinea pig from the pet store the other day, now I'm associating it with warts...
I never used to like it either, but have to admit I've started to like it also. I do prefer it as a nn for August, Augustus or Angus though.
I would say strictly nickname, and I don't like it. It's what keeps me from really considering August as a first name.
It's good! It's super cool.
You could use it as a full name, easy. It's very familiar. Since I met a girl called Bess (not a nickname for anything), I think anything's possible. As a nickname, I would only use it with something like Augustus, where the Gus sound is actually present (Angus or August will not do). But in general I don't like forcing a full name to achieve a desired nickname.

I don't like it because of its similarity to unattractive words (gas, gusset, gust, pus etc.) which really puts me off.
I don't mind it as a nickname. I don't find it old fashioned because I went to school with boys called Gus, one was Augustus "Gus" and one was Angus "Gus". They're both 22 now.
I prefer it as a nickname; it seems somewhat incomplete as a name on its own.

I always think of it as more of a nickname but it has been growing on me lately as a full name. I
Like it as a nn for Augustus.

I think Gus is terribly cute as a nickname. But I don't really think it works great on it's own. Like Sam or Tom, it just feels like it must be short for something. You're not a fan of August? Angus? Maybe even Magnus?
I like it on a cat - like Gus the Theatre Cat (whose real name is actually Asparagus) from CATS. But I don't like it on a human. It sounds kind of dorky. Sorry.
I like it, although reading RoxStar's post made me hesitant to say that lol. I don't know...I think it's kind of cool. I think the name would be pretty hilarious on a child under the age of 10 or so, but I don't see that being a huge problem. I think it would work fine on its own, although it might be nice to use it as a nn in case the child ends up hating it, which is certainly a strong possibility.
I don't see why it couldn't work on its own if you wanted it to. I'm sort of on the fence about it, but it could be cute on the right person. The only one I ever met is really an Angus.
I think it's hideously ugly either on its own or as a nickname, but I'd rather know a Gus at least has the option of a full name to use.
It just sounds gross, like a big fat guy with bad gas. Or a dog with bad gas. I always wondered why the series of children's books "Walter the Farting Dog" wasn't "Gus the Farting Dog."

Maybe I should write "Gus the Farting Dog".
give Walter a run for his money

I know someone who's FN is Gus - and just Gus. He's a...very special man, and not very well liked around here. So because of him I dislike it as a given name, I think it can be cute as a nickname for August or Augustus though.
