An epidemic strikes Alexander and Jeane’s town! Jeane and Alexander both fall ill, leaving Malcolm and Ysenda to care for their younger siblings, giving them greater maturity. Jeane attempts to use alchemy to help cure herself, but is unsuccessful. When visiting their sick parents, Leon and Lachlan fall ill. Lachlan recovers, but Leon’s condition worsens. Sadly, he dies. Lachlan is devastated to lose his twin, and Jeane and Alexander suffer a downturn in their illness when they learn of their son’s death.

From members of his secret society who have come to help nurse him, Alexander hears rumors of a monster dwelling in a nearby lake. Malcolm, who loves animals, is fascinated, and decides to join an expedition to search for it. He is disappointed when nothing is found.

Sadly, she dies giving birth, devastating Alexander and the children. Lachlan resents his new siblings for killing his mother and for being twins while he has lost his twin brother.

Kentigerna Forsythe, a beautiful blonde with green eyes, becomes his second love and gets pregnant with Alexander’s child. They get married, and baby Lilias is born. Malcolm accepts his father’s remarriage, but Ysenda and Lachlan hate their stepmother and new sibling for replacing their mother, while Lachlan continues to resent Agais and Elspet.

Malcolm joins a second expedition to find the Lake Monster. To his great joy and pride, he discovers the monster! He takes a young monster home with him and builds a tank for it, and the new species becomes referred to as Malcolm’s Monster. Duncan is old enough to help his sister and stepmother cook, and helping teach him is one of the few things Ysenda and Kentigerna will cooperate on. With Malcolm, the only child to unreservedly accept Kentigerna, gone on his trip, tension in the household has risen. Lachlan puts bugs in Elspet’s bed to scare her, and Ysenda and Kentigerna constantly squabble. Alexander tries to keep the peace between his children and his new wife, but even when Malcolm returns he is more focused on his monster.

A severe storm strikes the town, flooding some of the streets and knocking down houses. Luckily, the Barclay house is unaffected. However, Lachlan takes Agais and Lilias out into the storm, making them sick. He still has not forgiven Agais and Elspet for being twins or Lilias for being Kentigerna’s daughter. Thankfully, the girls recover. The whole family is furious with him,and he is sent to live with Jeane’s family in the hope he will mature. Malcolm studies the effect that the storm had on his monster, and even allows it to swim in the flooded streets.

Kentigerna gives birth to her and Alexander’s second child, another daughter named Abigall after her mother. Ysenda still resents her stepmother, but she helps care for the new baby and even makes a painting for her, having realized after Lachlan’s actions last year that hating children is unproductive. Lachlan himself is still living with his maternal grandparents, and they are unlikely to send him back anytime soon. Kentigerna is a lot happier now that Lachlan is gone and Ysenda is growing up, feeling more secure in her place in the family. Malcolm takes his monster to visit its parents, and publishes a piece in the town bulletin about it.

Alexander turns forty, which causes the Order of the Stones to conduct a secret ritual in celebration. Kentigerna is angry with him for staying out so late. They have an argument, but make up and one thing leads to another. Nine months later, Kentigerna gives birth to their first son together, Ewan, who strongly resembles his mother. After her brush with illness two years ago, Agais has developed a habit of daydreaming, which is worries her father and stepmother. Elspet’s hobby of reading is more productive- until she begins reading some secret society papers Alexander has and Jeane’s old alchemical texts. Alexander buys her more books, as his and Kentigerna’s shop is doing very well.

Kentigerna gives birth to her fourth child, a daughter named Isobell. This birth was difficult as she had had one child each the two previous years, and Alexander briefly fears for her life, having horrible flashbacks to the loss of his first wife Jeane. To help his stepmother, Duncan takes over most of the cooking for the family. Malcolm is becoming even more respected as a naturalist every day as he chronicles the growth of his young monster, which is becoming too large for its tank. Lilias learns how to play cards, and soon pesters all of her relatives for a game.

The town bulletin reports some gossip about Lachlan, still at his grandparents’ house, causing trouble for them. Alexander goes to speak with him about it, but is chased away by Lachlan who is still mad at him for Jeane’s death and Alexander’s remarriage. In the next issue of the bulletin, Alexander reads even worse news. He has to confiscate the bulletin from Elspet, as it is inappropriate for her. Apparently, Lachlan is practicing pagan necromancy in an effort to bring back his mother and twin brother.

Kentigerna and Alexander have another son, named Niall. The birth of the new baby convinces Alexander to once more try to bring Lachlan back home, but Lachlan cannot get over his hate. His necromancy had come to nothing, but he is a pariah in the town. Ysenda cannot convince her brother to return either. When buying supplies for his monster’s new, larger tank, Malcolm meets a handsome apothecary named Edmond Ferry. Malcolm falls in love with him, but does not want to cause scandal like his brother did.

Abigall becomes interested in collecting plants. Malcolm invites his apothecary friend, Edmond, to teach her about some of them, and Edmond reveals that he shares Malcolm’s feelings. They keep their relationship very secret, and Malcolm worries his family will disapprove. However, the monster likes Edmond a lot, which seals the deal on their relationship. A tragedy befalls the family when young Ewan drinks tainted water and becomes ill. Alexander takes him to his secret society in the hope they can cure him. However, the treatment the society gives Ewan ends up killing him. Kentigerna and Alexander are devastated, and Alexander sadly remembers the long-ago death of Lachlan’s twin Leon. Lachlan hears of Ewan’s death and is very upset, especially as he had never even met his younger half-brother. Lachlan returns to his family and attempts to make amends with the twins, Kentigerna, and his remaining half-siblings, having finally realized he was wrong to resent them.

Ysenda, who has never truly been able to let go of her resentment towards Kentigerna, jumps at the chance to start her own family when a handsome older painter professes his love for her. She elopes with him, only to be shocked when another woman turns up at their house- his other wife! She had been tricked to get her dowry. Heartbroken, Ysenda returns to her father’s house and stops painting. When she realizes she is pregnant by the con man, she is even more upset. She takes work as a gardener to support herself and her child. She names her daughter Hextilda, reflecting her feeling that a hex had been placed on her. Surprisingly, it is Kentigerna who comforts her and convinces her to continue painting.

Kentigerna and Alexander have another daughter, Morven. Ysenda helps out with the new baby, and often cares for both Morven and Hextilda together. She has finally buried the hatchet with Kentigerna. Malcolm’s monster has once more outgrown its tank. Malcolm and Edmond worry it may be lonely, so Malcolm goes to the lake and brings back another monster, this one a baby. Malcolm determines that the baby is female, and names it Fionnghuala. Malcolm and Edmond sing to the baby monster to soothe it, and soon little Isobell joins them, having come to love singing. Alexander gets Isobell musical training.

Duncan gets a job as a cook, fulfilling his long-held dream. Lachlan sees this and, still regretting his behavior as a child, gets a job as well. However, things for the family are generally looking good, and Alexander and Kentigerna are sure the future will be good.

Lachlan is devastated to lose his twin, and Jeane and Alexander suffer a downturn in their illness when they learn of their son’s death.

Malcolm, who loves animals, is fascinated, and decides to join an expedition to search for it. He is disappointed when nothing is found.

Malcolm joins a second expedition to find the Lake Monster. To his great joy and pride, he discovers the monster! He takes a young monster home with him and builds a tank for it, and the new species becomes referred to as Malcolm’s Monster. Duncan is old enough to help his sister and stepmother cook, and helping teach him is one of the few things Ysenda and Kentigerna will cooperate on. With Malcolm, the only child to unreservedly accept Kentigerna, gone on his trip, tension in the household has risen. Lachlan puts bugs in Elspet’s bed to scare her, and Ysenda and Kentigerna constantly squabble. Alexander tries to keep the peace between his children and his new wife, but even when Malcolm returns he is more focused on his monster.

A severe storm strikes the town, flooding some of the streets and knocking down houses. Luckily, the Barclay house is unaffected. However, Lachlan takes Agais and Lilias out into the storm, making them sick. He still has not forgiven Agais and Elspet for being twins or Lilias for being Kentigerna’s daughter. Thankfully, the girls recover. The whole family is furious with him,and he is sent to live with Jeane’s family in the hope he will mature. Malcolm studies the effect that the storm had on his monster, and even allows it to swim in the flooded streets.

Lachlan himself is still living with his maternal grandparents, and they are unlikely to send him back anytime soon. Kentigerna is a lot happier now that Lachlan is gone and Ysenda is growing up, feeling more secure in her place in the family. Malcolm takes his monster to visit its parents, and publishes a piece in the town bulletin about it.

Alexander turns forty, which causes the Order of the Stones to conduct a secret ritual in celebration. Kentigerna is angry with him for staying out so late. They have an argument, but make up and one thing leads to another. Nine months later, Kentigerna gives birth to their first son together, Ewan, who strongly resembles his mother. After her brush with illness two years ago, Agais has developed a habit of daydreaming, which is worries her father and stepmother. Elspet’s hobby of reading is more productive- until she begins reading some secret society papers Alexander has and Jeane’s old alchemical texts. Alexander buys her more books, as his and Kentigerna’s shop is doing very well.

Kentigerna gives birth to her fourth child, a daughter named Isobell. This birth was difficult as she had had one child each the two previous years, and Alexander briefly fears for her life, having horrible flashbacks to the loss of his first wife Jeane. To help his stepmother, Duncan takes over most of the cooking for the family. Malcolm is becoming even more respected as a naturalist every day as he chronicles the growth of his young monster, which is becoming too large for its tank. Lilias learns how to play cards, and soon pesters all of her relatives for a game.

Alexander goes to speak with him about it, but is chased away by Lachlan who is still mad at him for Jeane’s death and Alexander’s remarriage. In the next issue of the bulletin, Alexander reads even worse news. He has to confiscate the bulletin from Elspet, as it is inappropriate for her. Apparently, Lachlan is practicing pagan necromancy in an effort to bring back his mother and twin brother.

Kentigerna and Alexander have another son, named Niall. The birth of the new baby convinces Alexander to once more try to bring Lachlan back home, but Lachlan cannot get over his hate. His necromancy had come to nothing, but he is a pariah in the town. Ysenda cannot convince her brother to return either. When buying supplies for his monster’s new, larger tank, Malcolm meets a handsome apothecary named Edmond Ferry. Malcolm falls in love with him, but does not want to cause scandal like his brother did.

Abigall becomes interested in collecting plants. Malcolm invites his apothecary friend, Edmond, to teach her about some of them, and Edmond reveals that he shares Malcolm’s feelings. They keep their relationship very secret, and Malcolm worries his family will disapprove. However, the monster likes Edmond a lot, which seals the deal on their relationship. A tragedy befalls the family when young Ewan drinks tainted water and becomes ill. Alexander takes him to his secret society in the hope they can cure him. However, the treatment the society gives Ewan ends up killing him. Kentigerna and Alexander are devastated, and Alexander sadly remembers the long-ago death of Lachlan’s twin Leon. Lachlan hears of Ewan’s death and is very upset, especially as he had never even met his younger half-brother. Lachlan returns to his family and attempts to make amends with the twins, Kentigerna, and his remaining half-siblings, having finally realized he was wrong to resent them.

Ysenda, who has never truly been able to let go of her resentment towards Kentigerna, jumps at the chance to start her own family when a handsome older painter professes his love for her. She elopes with him, only to be shocked when another woman turns up at their house- his other wife! She had been tricked to get her dowry. Heartbroken, Ysenda returns to her father’s house and stops painting. When she realizes she is pregnant by the con man, she is even more upset. She takes work as a gardener to support herself and her child. She names her daughter Hextilda, reflecting her feeling that a hex had been placed on her. Surprisingly, it is Kentigerna who comforts her and convinces her to continue painting.

Malcolm’s monster has once more outgrown its tank. Malcolm and Edmond worry it may be lonely, so Malcolm goes to the lake and brings back another monster, this one a baby. Malcolm determines that the baby is female, and names it Fionnghuala. Malcolm and Edmond sing to the baby monster to soothe it, and soon little Isobell joins them, having come to love singing. Alexander gets Isobell musical training.

He is sad to lose his artifact,having had a hard life and lost many loved ones. However, things for the family are generally looking good, and Alexander and Kentigerna are sure the future will be good.
