20 Years with the Sacheverells in Elizabethan England
Part I

There is a minor epidemic of smallpox in the Sacheverell’s community. The couple is not affected. Martha is frightened about the possibility of raising a family in such a disease-ridden town, but Giles decides that they will make a decision once they have their first child. Martha refuses to speak to Giles for several weeks, causing a stir among the townspeople.

Several months after the Sacheverells’ argument, gossip is moving around town that Giles is going to abandon Martha because of her stubbornness. When Martha first hears of it, she is furious and questions her husband, who honestly tells her the rumors are false. She cuts ties with many women of the town and once again pressures Giles to move.

After hearing about what happened during Martha’s previous illness, Giles’ widowed mother, Betella Dove Sacheverell, moves in to help take care of the house. Surprisingly, she gets along marvelously with Martha. This is a great relief to Giles, who now has less work to do at home, especially since there is a supply shortage at work.

A cook’s tent steals all of Giles’ customers, causing immense stress and arguments in the house. Martha once again presents the possibility of moving, but Betella refuses, as she loves this town. They do not move, and Martha again gives the others the cold shoulder, nearly ruining her relationship with her mother-in-law forever.

Meanwhile, Martha gives birth to yet another girl on December 29th! She is irritable that she has spent all her time for the past year being pregnant or in bed, but she adores her children.

Betsey has a scar for the rest of her life.
