Being an Aussie, I would wonder what it's short for but also if that person was Australian themselves and if that person spent some time somewhere where they were indeed the token Australian.
I was thinking that "Aussie" (this particular spelling) could be used as a nickname for Austin. But no one would use it. Besides, I'm too used to seeing Ozzie and Ozzy used as nicknames.
