I wouldn't use Clarence, but I do like it. It's smooth and suave without being smarmy. It has some fairly strong vibes as a black guy's name to me, though I did know one white Clarence.
Clancy is too stereotypical-in-a-bad-way Irish for me. I did once know a dog named Clancy.I don't like Claire or Clare much for a girl and I definitely don't like it for a guy. There is some precedent in it being used for men. There was a famous American general during and after WWII called Claire Lee Chennault. If I remember right he commanded the Flying Tigers in China.Before you criticize a man, walk a mile in his shoes. That way, when you criticize him, you're a mile away and you have his shoes!
