Haiti comes from Ayiti, which means "land of high mountains" from the Indigenous Taíno people of Hispaniola. The name was restored by the Haitian Revolution leader Jean-Jacques Dessalines to rename the newly independent Saint-Domingue (What we know as Haiti today), in honor of the islands Amerindian predecessors.
