Meaning & History

From Pashto کابل (Kabel) which may have been derived from Kambuja or Kamboja, the name of an ancient Indo-Iranian tribe and kingdom. The name is of uncertain meaning, possibly from Sanskrit काम (kama) meaning "love, desire" and भुज् (bhuj) meaning "use, possess, rule". This is the name of the capital city of Afghanistan.
