Pronounced Pron. NWAK-SHAWT(French) nwahk-SHAWT(English) nwak-SHAWT(English, German) noo-ahk-SHAWT(English)  [key·IPA]

Meaning & History

From Arabic نواكشوط (Nuwakshut) of unclear origin. It may come from a Berber name meaning "place of the winds" or perhaps from Arabic نأو (na'wi) meaning "shelter, harbor" combined with شط (shatt) meaning "beach, seashore, coast". This is the name of the capital city of Mauritania.
