A country in Europe and a part of the United Kingdom. Its name derives from the Old English Wælisc, meaning 'foreigner, Welshman'. Its Welsh name Cymru and sometimes Gymru is derived from the Brythonic Celtic combrogi, meaning 'fellow-countrymen'. It is cognate with Modern Welsh gymrawd, meaning 'comrade, fellow'.
