Meaning & History
Trondheim is the third largest city in Norway. It was originally named Nidaros but known colloquially as kaupangr "marketplace" or kaupangr í Þróndheimi "the marketplace in Trondheim/Trøndelag" which was later shortened to just Þróndheimr. Þróndheimi was originally the name of a region in Norway but the meaning shifted to just refer to the city (the region is now called Trøndelag in modern Norwegian). The name itself is a combination of Old Norse þrœndir, þrœndr "person from Trøndelag" and heim "home".
