Meaning & History

A village in Northern England. The first element seems to be Cumbric pen, which means 'summit, head'. The most obvious explanation for the second is Old English sceaga, meaning 'woods'. However, early attestations do not support this, the village was recorded as Pencher in c.1190. The second element could be a cognate of Welsh chwr, 'extremity' or chaer, 'fort'.
