Meaning & History
From Latin Tingis, itself from the Punic root tng of uncertain origin. It may have been derived from Berber tingis meaning "marsh", based on the old Berber name ⵜⵉⵏⴳⵉ (Tingi). The name was later transmitted into Ancient Greek as Τίγισις (Tigisis) or Τιγγίς (Tingis), with the Greeks attributing it to Tinjis, a goddess in Greek mythology. This is the name of a city in northwestern Morocco.
