Meaning & History

From the name of a group of tribes that once lived in the area, the Ulaidh, and either Irish tír or Old Norse staðr, both meaning “land”, “place” or “territory”.

This is the name of one of the four provinces, formerly Gaelic kingdoms, of Ireland. It contains the counties Antrim, Armagh, Cavan, Derry or Londonderry, Donegal, Down, Fermanagh, Monaghan and Tyrone.
