Meaning & History
Swift Current is a translation of the Cree phrase "kisiskâciwan", meaning "it flows swiftly", referring to the fast-moving waters of the Swift Current Creek. The name was translated into English by early European explorers and settlers. The area was historically used by Indigenous peoples for trade and travel, and the creek played an important role in settlement and transportation. Early European explorers and settlers adopted an English translation of the name, which later influenced the naming of the city Swift Current.
