Meaning & History

From Urdu حیدر آباد‎ (haidar abad), derived from Arabic حيدر (haydar) meaning "lion, warrior" (see the given name Haidar) and Urdu آباد (abad) meaning "populated area, inhabited area, city" (of Persian origin). The name honours Caliph Ali ibn Abi Talib, who was also known by the nickname Haydar for his lion-like valour in battle.

This is the name of a city in India as well as a city in Pakistan.
