It's so long (and, to me anyway, it's old-fashioned sounding), it's bound to get nicked somehow. Esme or Esmee seems to me to be a pretty unlikely candidate where I live (US).. it seems as formal as the long name to me. I think it's more likely her friends might just call her Esmy (or Ezzie, Emsy, Esmie, or whatever a child's natural shortening of Esmerelda in her dialect would be). Meri or Meryl is another possibility, though a little more artificial.
