The first and only time I've heard it was a woman calling her dog that. I just figured it was made up because it just sounds namey. But, did you see this?

I hope you'll post if you find anything.I was inclined to think it was a short form for Jolana or Jolanda.. but have found no reason to believe that either. - chazda
