[Facts] MELVIS
Hello,
I have been searching for the origins of my Grandmother's first name for a while and haven't come up with much...Anyway, she is 78 now and it would be nice for her name to be recognised in some way.
Could you add it to your database please? Her name is MELVIS, she is English and was born in 1926, the only information I know about the name is that her mother always liked to call her daughters (7 others) unusual names and when her husband (who wanted to call my Nanna Augustas Octavia for heaven's sake!) was pressing her for a name as she lay recovering from the birth, she came up with this as the first thing that came in to her head!
Hope you can help?
Best wishes,
Terri Metcalfe

Hi,Terri! My Mum was called Melvis. She was born in 1921. Her Dad had dual English and Australian nationality as he was in the ANZACs in WW1 having emigrated there in c.1911 with his wife ,Florence. She came back after a few weeks in Oz and everyone thought that the marriage was over. However, he was posted to Bury ( just a few miles from where Florence lived in Bolton). Of course, they got back togethe r after the war. Mum was born in Bolton and her unusual name , she was told, was from a mountainous region in the Darling Ranges in Western Australia. But, Australia House have told me that there is no such place. I've read that it's a boy's name but it sounds too pretty _ just like my Mum. Glad to know of others by the same name. X
