WDYT of this girl's name? And the nickname Carly?

This is actually my best friends name! she is 16 and sometimes it can be prn. differently. CAR-lyn or car-LYN depending on how you use it. I really dislike the nn Carly so I'm going to suggest the nn Car. This is what I usually call her.

I know a girl named Karlan, so Carlyn seems much nicer in comparison. It's got a cute sound, but it's nrms.

Too much like Carolyn, which is a fine name but prefer Caroline. Carly can be it's own name, it doesn't have to be a nickname.

I'm surprised at myself, but I actually quite like this name. I also think that Carly makes a nice nn for it. I do know someone with Carly as a full forename, and I think it will age very gracefully on her.

Since it was within the same minute that I did. We just missed each other--sorry! If it's family, it's family, and you're lucky that your mother's maiden name wasn't something like Schneeburger. ;)
I still think that the George Carlin associations are a bit too strong for a first name (a middle name would be okay)--but if you're going to use it, I'd spell it Carlin. Looks a lot more feminine to me than Carlyn, which just looks silly in my eyes. Besides, if your mother was a Carlin, it would be most honouring her by naming a child Carlin.
Oh--and would you consider Carlin for a son? I think it would work very nicely on a boy. Carl would be nice, too.

I'm an American and I live in the US and I have no idea who George Carlin is.

It's a name that's not really my style either yet I somehow like it and really it's because my mom's maiden name is Carlin. So I was thinking of a way to make it look a bit more feminine-just an idea. I don't think I would use it anyway but it would be a nice way of honoring her last name-esp. since she had no brothers to carry on the name-just sisters.

But I don't think the letter Y magically makes masculine names "feminine". Arbitrarily adding a Y to a masculine name usually just results in the name looking misspelled to me, not "feminine".
Now, Carlina or Carline does look and sound feminine to me. The former could be pronounced KAHR-lin-a, kahr-LIN-a, KAHR-leen-a, or kahr-LEEN-a (I would go with the first or last one); the latter could be pronounced kahr-LEEN or kahr-LIEN.

It sounds very masculine to me, and I have associatioons with it as a surname (Carlin). Carly is kind of cute, though I don't care much for it. There are plently of other names that nn could be used for though, like Carissa, Carla, Carlene, Caroline, etc.

I do not like any Carl- / Karl- names for girl, plain and simple. Since Carl is so masculine to me, adding feminine sounds does not feminize it for me. Plus, it looks like the surname Carlin (as in the comedian George Carlin), but with a y. That trendy little y does not make a male name feminine.
So, I don't care for it.

I think it's very, very trendy, very datable, and very "young" imo. She won't stay a little baby or toddler forever, and I have trouble picturing a grown woman called Carlyn (at all, let alone picturing a grown Carlyn being taken seriously).
Carla Lynne (fn/mn) is much better in my opinion, and will age beautifully imo.

I know of a girl whose name is Carling. Both that and Carlyn are NMS, but I'm not sure which I like more.

For some reason I automatically think of the comedian George Carlin. Carly on its own isn't bad.
