Help[Facts] Why make a name unnecessary long?

I mean is one name and one surname not enough?
A person will almost never be called by his/her middle anyway.
It will only make it take longer time to write the name.
Furthermore if a too long name is given to a person it will mostly result in people around the person calling him/her a nick name instead.
