I like it. My friend just had a little girl and Eleanor, nn Ellie was almost her name. (She ended up a Julia Frances.)

Of course, there are many more names with the "-el" element in the middle of the name. I've seen Isabelle, nn Ellie. It's a bit forced, to me, but still an option.
