Credit goes to someone else (can't remember who, sorry!) for bringing up a name similar to this a couple of days ago, but it got me thinking about Emmeline. I've always loved it partly because of Emmeline Pankhurst as a namesake. However, like so many -ine names, it's the pronunciation that bothers me. "Line" in a name is so ambiguous. People will read is as "lin", "leen" or even "lyne". For that reason I prefer the "lyn" spelling when that's the pronunciation I'm going for (e.g. Madelyn, Rosalyn etc.) On the other hand I like the "ine" spelling when I'm saying "lyne", e.g. Adeline "AD-eh-lyne".
So WDYT of Emmelyn, EM-eh-lin?

I think it's pretty. I ran into a little girl with this name the past weekend. I'm not sure how she spelled it.

This is my sister's favorite name. I think she even likes the same spelling ... although hers may be Emmalyn. Either way, it is a beautiful name.

Oh, no. I disagree. Emmeline is so much better, particularly if you want the connection to Ms Pankhurst.
I know pronuciation can sometimes be a bother, but altered spellings are so, uh, well, . . . . How do I say this without offending you or starting a firestorm here? I can't, so I'll just say altered spellings are nms. :-)

I think that Emmeline looks really nice, though I'd never use it. I pronunce the name Emma-Line, which is weird because I'm lazy with a lot of -line names. Caroline, for example, sounds like Carolyn pretty much every time I say it--I have to catch myself in the middle of the name and force myself to say Carol-Line.
Emmelyn looks ugly to me, I'm afraid. Emmalyn looks a little better--the second E looks sleepy-eyed and lazy to me. I don't like it too much, though. I'd either go with Emmelin / Emmalin or use Emmeline and just correct people.

The only name I would pronounce as "line" is Caroline. And then only in English, otherwise I pronounce Caroline just as Carolyn (a more French pronounciation).

I pronounce everything with a line 'lein', leine 'layne' and lyn 'lin'
If you want to lyn pronounciation then I would go with Emmelyn although I think it looks trendy and I prefer the 'lein' pronounciation anyway
