[Opinions] It seems to be celebrity baby day today....Another one.
Tiger's wife gives birth to a daughterTiger Woods is a daddy.Less than 24 hours after world golf No.1 Woods finished second at the US Open on Father's Day, his wife gave birth to a daughter.Woods announced on his website - www.tigerwoods.com - that Sam Alexis Woods was born early on Monday morning US time."Both Elin and Sam are doing well and resting peacefully," Woods wrote."We want to thank our doctors and the hospital staff for all their dedicated and hard work. This is truly a special time in our lives and we look forward to introducing Sam to our family and friends over the next few weeks."We thank everyone for their well wishes and continued respect of our privacy."Woods finished one shot behind Angel Cabrera on Sunday to finish second in a major for the second time this year.Phil Mickelson's first child was also born the day after he finished second in the US Open in 1999.

I'm in the majority--sounds masculine to me. Don't Charlie Sheen and Denise Richards have a daughter named Sam, too? It's too nickname-y and easily confused for a boy, imo. Alexis is just gross on a girl, so that doesn't help. :-/

It's cute. I like Alexis Samantha Woods better though

I heard this on the news this morning but didn't catch it all. I thought I just heard "Sam" but thought I had missed something - looks like I heard right.

Gah!I was just about to say "What a handsome name! Sam and Alexis are both great names, and they sound nice together". Then I realized they had a daughter, not a son. I'm totally not diggin' Sam Alexis for a girl. It's just too masculine. Sam is an OK nn for Samantha, Samara, Samuela etc. but as stand-alone name it's too masculine for a girl, IMO. And I really dislike Alexis on a girl because I love it so much for a boy. I'd hate to see it turning strictly feminine.

I agree!

ditto to all of thatyep

That was my exact response! I really hate Alexis on a girl...it's such a nice boy's name.

Agreed.

For me, Alexis is an extremely feminine name. I know five girl's named Alexis, all quite feminine. The only way I see this on a boy, is if he were obviously from Russia or a Slavic country where Alexis is used for males more often.

It seems to be just Sam, which I was surprised about. I do really like the name Sam though. Alexis I don't care for. The combo is a bit too unisex for me.

Well that's good that it isn't a trendy wacked out name. I think it's cute.

I only like Sam as a nickname for Samuel. It seems too boyish, and Alexis isn't my style either.Samantha Alexis would have been much more girly imo. Regardless, though, Congratulations to Tiger and Elin!

ah, the androgynyI quickly skimmed this article the first time. It wasn't until I read it a second time that I realized they had a girl. And am I the only one mildly amused by the fact her initials are S.A.W. with her last name being Woods and all...

I caught that immediately as well.Made me chuckle, even though the androgyny grates on my nerves.

I had to read it twice, tooYes, I am amused by the SAW in the Woods. :-)

Sam Alexis sounds so boyish. Why couldn't they name her Samantha Alexis and just call her Sam?

Why name a child something you are never going to call her by? Why not just cut the middleman so to speak and call her Sam? To me it would only sound boyish if her name was Sam Alexei or Samuel Akseli. I am not saying I like her name, as I actually dislike it, but I don't like it when parents name their children some huge name like Samantha and then never call her by it.

AgreedI definitely agree with Sam Alexis sounding feminine - to most, the first thing that comes to mind when someone says Alexis is that it's a girl's name, because it's so widely used on girls. I like Alexis but I hate the name Sam and Samantha.Though I agree on the above, I somewhat agree with eliminating the middle man. I think if it's a case where her name is Katherine and you want to call her Katie, that's different, but Sam Alexis just doesn't sound right, in my opinion. But then again, maybe they hated the name Samantha but loved the name Sam. Never know.

To give the kid options. When she is older she could go by Samantha, or Sam.And how do you know you're never going to call her by Samantha (if that was her name). She's just been born.

Well, if Tiger and his wife hate the name Samantha why would they give her the name Samantha? Why not just Sam if that is what they love?

I see what you're saying LMS. I agree.

Not really the issue.
The name Samantha is only being used as an example.

I know, and I was saying that why use a longer name...any longer name...if the parents hate the name? Whether it is Samantha, or Samara, etc. it doesn't matter if it isn't liked as much as Sam.

And i agree, they should call their baby the name they like best...
It doesn't invalidate our opinion that a longer "formal" name would be nicer, with "Sam" as a nickname. Some people like formal names with nicknames, others don't see the point. I personally am glad i was named Elizabeth, not just Liz. It gives me more options and allows for differing degrees of formality when dealing with work people and with friends & family.

I agree.

Oh no, I am not saying that formal names are bad, I just was meaning that in the particular case of Tiger Woods daughter it just probably made sense for them to use Sam and not a longer formal name. I guess I just don't like it when some people (this isn't including you necessarily) say there MUST be a formal name, not just a nn. I do agree with you though when you say many names would be better with a longer more formal name.
