Tequila has been found regularly in the African-American community (and occasionally in other ethnic groups) for over a generation now.
I don't like alcholic beverage names myself. But
Sherry and
Brandy have both been extremely well-used, and that gives parents the idea that Tequila, Chardonnay, Alize, Daiquiri, and other names of alchoholic beverages which sound euphonious are appropriate children's names. I have a student right now who has a young daughter named Alize.
He thought it sounded beautiful and like a girl's name. Tequila certainly has the sound and form of what people are used to in a female name, also, and so many parents have decided it's a pretty name for a girl.
