[Opinions] Pretty much same.
Liam is so silly and trendy, and William is so classic and handsome. You can call him Liam if you really want.
Edited because I hadn't even read the original post. Here goes:
Compare:

http://www.behindthename.com/top/search.php?extra=p&terms=liam&submit=GoWhich does it look like will age better and with more dignity? I know you don't like nicknames, but still, if it really comes down to it, you can call him Liam. It doesn't matter to anyone else that you don't like nicknames; it's only your own standard you're jumping if you call him Liam occasionally/affectionately. And if he instructs other people to call him Liam sometimes instead of Will (as will inevitably happen with William) I don't understand why this would be such a conflict.
W. is a much cooler first initial. William carries so much more dignity and has such a strong and rich history to it. It's so regal.
Liam sounds silly and floppy, like a fish out of water. The only appeal to it (and it doesn't even do this for me, just for people who like Liam) is that it's cute and snappy! (Bleah, it's not.) Cute and snappy does not age well. Men don't want to be cute.William ALL the way.
