[Surname] Re: origin and pronunciation
It is a Polish spelling, but I think it should be Kowaliszyn, which is found in Poland. However I think it originated further east, Russia or Belarus, there is a Russian name Kovalishin. The basis of the name is kowal, or koval, meaning "blacksmith". It appears to denote descent from a blacksmith's wife or from a lady blacksmith, but I could be getting something wrong.
