Yes, it's biblical, because one of the Old Testament prophets is Malachi (the last one in the Old Testament). I like it, but I have a stronger liking for Old Testament names than my wife has, so I've never gotten to use it. Good sound, in my opinion. I think it will be seen as a known name rather than something zany or made-up, not likely to result in teasing, and not likely to become faddish.
Combinations? Go with a single-syllable name such as Tate or Grant or Paul.
Nicknames? Maybe "Kye" (or however you want to spell it--I mean calling him by the last syllable of his name). I like that better than "Mal."
