[Opinions] Gus
So I am obsessing over the name Gus lately. We watched Cinderella recently, and Chris loves the little mouse and sings the "Cinder-ellie" song with him. Now, I wouldn't use Gus for the mouse, but just hearing it so much has it stuck in my head, and it does make me smile.August NN Gus would likely be it; I wouldn't use Gus on its own. WDYT (mouse association aside!) and combo suggestions? I tend to like the flow of August better as a MN, but I am not sure what to pair with it. I've realized that I have a ton of boys combos, but they all use the same two/three names interchangeably!

We liked Gus a lot for our son too- didn't do it though. It definitely needs to be a nickname, and we didn't like any of the full names. None of them went with our surname. Fergus was the most probable- pretty cool actually to the point where it may just stay as FergusI initially liked b/c Gus McCrae from the both the book and fantastic mini-series Lonesome Dove. Robert Duvall as Gus is about as likable as a character can be

I love Gus (as you probably already know). I don't care for it as a full name, but I love it as a nn for August, Augustus, Angus, Augusten, etc. August is my favorite, and I like August even without a nn, actually. I love both Henry August and August Henry (and I think you do as well :b), but I'm afraid both are on the rise. August Henry does seem a bit more interesting (and not as likely to be overused soon) to me than the former, though. I never thought much about the name Gus until a few years ago when I became obsessed with a tv show called "Queer As Folk". A lesbian couple on the show named their son Gus (it was between that and Abraham, and one guy commented that he'd get teased for Abraham but not Gus), and at first I thought, 'Ewww, Gus?!' But seeing the cute little boy on the show grow up for 5 years, the name really grew on me. I don't associate the name only with him, nor would I be naming my child after him/that show in any way, it just helped me appreciate the name more. ;)

Sorry, but I just can't get past the Cinderella mouse association so it's a name I have trouble taking seriously. It would be a huge no-no as a full name, but I can tollerate it as a nickname for August , Augustus or Augustine.

I really don't like it - it's my maternal grandfather's name and he's an awful person: pathological liar, drunk, addict, you name it. We cut all ties with him years and years ago. So he's all I think of, and I just can't like the name because of him. :/ Sorry.August is fine, though.

Gus is supremely ugly to me. I picture a big fat guy with fat rolls on the back of his neck and a lot of hair where it doesn't belong, burping and farting and grunting and swilling cheap beer in front of televised boxing all day long.

Oddly enoughthat's exactly what I picture, too. :-P I also mentally put him in overalls, sans shirt. It's funny for me because I have an adorable relative Angus nicknamed Gus. You'd think some cute little kid would take away that connotation but it hasn't. A few years ago I lived in the dorms for university and was down the hall from two guys, Bob and Gus. At one point someone graffitied their door with "Boob and Gas." That really adequately sums it up for me.

Bob and Gus!The new Grumpy Old Men!I usually have Gus in saggy-seated underwear and one of those strappy undershirts with his fat gut hanging down and hairs poking out through the fabric in random places.
