[Opinions] Re: Ganymede
in reply to a message by Array
I am torn.On the one hand, it does sound absolutly lovely with something like John. I've always really liked the character from Greek mythology. (I like Hyacinth for a boy for the same reasons I like Ganymede.) Ganymede is on my list of male GP names. As a middle name, I'm inclined to say, heck yes! Go for it!...but I'm fairly certain that the name Ganymede is the root of the word catamite. Which, needless to say, puts me off of the idea of using it a bit- almost feels like naming the kid John Catamite.

...You know, it's not very often I have to look a word up, but catamite was new to me. Clearly, I don't read enough literature involving pedophiles. ;)Merriam Webster confirms your suspicions, but I'm entirely too in love for it to bother me. Ganymede came first, et cetera. Thank you for your input!Array

I normally have the philosophy that anything goes as a middle name, and you're right--Ganymede the myth did come first. I urge you to abandon this one, though. Ganymede is more than just the root of catamite. It's slang used by pedophiles for the boys they victimize. They're very fond of the name. You can google it and find the Ganymede Collective in Montreal, Ganymede vacations bound for brothels of little boys...it's just a big big yuck. The myth isn't cute enough to balance out this ugliness.

Oh God!I did not know that at all! I was leaning toward thinking it would be OK to use even though it was the root of catamite because hey, it's a great character and a nice name. But no. That just...oh God. Oh, that is just so gross. Oh, now I'm never going to be able to think about the myth the same way.I agree with Allie. This makes me wicked squeamish and I think it would be a really bad idea to use it.
