[Opinions] Lily

I have an inexplicable aversion to all names with the 'lil' sound in them. This includes, but is by no means limited to: Lilian, Lillith, and Lilibet. I have no idea why, but I have the same thing with 'max'.
I think it's a really pretty name. It's sweet and feminine, but to me, it also has some spunk. I like the length of it and the sound. The only thing is that it's very popular right now. That doesn't necessarily bother me too much though.
Lily is absolutely gorgeous!

It's a very pretty name, yet so common!
Flower names can become pretty trendy, so I'd shy away from it for a while. My current favorite flower name is Hyacinth.
Anyway, MN suggestions are wide open.
Lily Alexandra
Lily Anastasia
Lily Genevieve
Lily Katharine
Lily Miranda
Lily Rebekah
Lily Ursula
Lily Victoria
etc. etc.

i think it's too common but otherwise would be lovely
although i would prefer Lilith for the meaning.

At one time, I loved Lily. It's very soft and almost fragile. Lately, it's just so common that it has lost most of its luster for me. The mns I like best with Lily tend to have at least three syllables:
Lily Beatrice
Lily Caroline
Lily Catherine
Lily Christina
Lily Corinna
Lily Francesca
Lily Margaret
Lily Miranda
Lily Rebecca
Lily Susanna
Lily Victoria
Lily Beatrice
Lily Caroline
Lily Catherine
Lily Christina
Lily Corinna
Lily Francesca
Lily Margaret
Lily Miranda
Lily Rebecca
Lily Susanna
Lily Victoria
Why not Lucy instead?
I think it's flimsy and unrefined-sounding. I really despise the name Lily beyond measure. I hope I do not ever meet anyone with this name because it will surely put my in an awful mood. The myriad of parents using this name should consider the infinitely more attractive Lucy.

Just out of personal curiosity, what does and doesn't make names refined?
Well, it's honestly the kinds of parents who utilize this name that give it this feel.
LOL
If it's the type of parents, how would suggesting an alternative name to them change anything?
Personally, I don't mind that Lily's really popular. It's sweet without being too sweet (I think the L's give it a certain awkwardness), and some names have to be more popular than others. Lily's nice. I am glad I have managed to overcome the "images" associated with names when I am considering whether they are good names or not; it enables me to be happy to meet a Lily, Emily, Emma, Victoria, James, Jacob, or William.

I've seen people from teenage moms to late life moms use this name.
I'm not picking, but just trying to understand.

Well to me it's a mixture of poor taste, and a want for your child to always sound like a child without considering her place in the adult world.
I disagree
I actually think that Lily can go both ways, and I can see it on women from a tiny child to a woman in her 90's. I think it's sweet, but "sweet" does not mean "unrefined." It's attractive and I know very few Lilys.

Maybe in the backwoods of West Virginia.

Hey, watch it.
I'm from West Virginia, buster. We're not all rednecks and hillbilles. They're more toward Southwestern WV. (*cough*Calhoun County*cough*)
I've only met two Lilys, FYI. One is 9 and one is 60. I don't like it as a full name, but I think Lilith and Lillian are nice, if not names I would use.
ETA: I read your other post. Elizabeth nn Lily is nice as well. :)

LOL. Sorry. I am native Marylander. It's just an expression we use. Meant no offence.
Yeah, I know. [m]
I was born in Maryland and we moved to WV (Eastern Panhandle) when I was four. I live in the more civilized area of the state. The Southwestern part is like a whole different world; it's amazing. They use swinging bridges and they have more unpaved roads than any other place I've seen. It takes forty minutes to get to a store from some places!
