[Opinions] Lakeisha
I was just outside with my fahter and we saw two girls, one of them called out for her friend, Lakeisha. I'm only guessing on the spelling and it sounded more like Lakisa (in Swedish as least). I'm also guessing that she was from Africa. Anyway, what do you think of the name? I don't like it but it was fun to hear a different name over here. :)

Lakeisha is an African-American name here in the U.S. As such, I would say that it can't even really be judged by Europeans or European-Americans. African-Americans have their own naming tastes and styles, unique to them. They have a completely different naming culture, and the names they use almost always sound unattractive to whites. These names are usually ones that whites would never consider using. I really feel that Europeans or European-Americans shouldn't even attempt to judge such names, because they're not part of their culture, and they can't judge them fairly. For instance, my ex-boyfriend is African-American. His cousin has nine children. Their names:Lamar
Lamont
LaPortia
Lakeisha--there it is
Jazzmone
Bre'onna
Borshay
Aces
AriesI did post about Aces and Aries, and of course, no one liked Aces, though a couple of people did say they liked Aries. I haven't posted about the others. There's no point, because almost all white people will say they're terrible. But to African-Americans, they're a source of cultural pride. I just don't think they can be judged in the way other names can be judged.

I agreeI'm white, but it bothers me when we label African American names trashy on the whole. I may not prefer them, but I think judging them from a white cultural standpoint is a bit disingenuous.

It's pretty rare over here (Britain). I always associate it with African-Americans as I gather from my name books it is a popular name in that community along with similar names like Latasha and Latisha (which I have seen in Britain). I've also heard Keisha used.I love the sound of it, I think it's pretty. I'd never use it but I did name one of my punctuation pets Lakeisha (along with Tanisha and Ayesha).

Lakeisha isn't that different over here, unfortunately. It's not like you meet a Lakeisha every day, but it's often considered very trashy (along the lines of Shaniqua and Precious). But I guess that over in Scandinavia it would indeed be pretty unique.

It is unique here but my first thought when I heard her name was just trashy. ;)

I like Lakeisha with that spelling, and also Aisha, although they fit people born in the 1970s-1980s better than babies.

I hate it. It makes me think of Latisha, Keneisha.. etc. Really low-class and cheap-sounding.
