[Opinions] Merit.
This has grown on me so much. I feel like it'll get trendy soon and I am rooting for it very much.I was reintroduced to it via this post http://www.babynamewizard.com/archives/2008/9/namers-remorse and the comment:How do you think it would fly if we sent out a double birth announcement when our next baby is born (should it be a boy), something like this? :"We are delighted to introduce to you our son Barnaby Merit _____.In light of this development, we would also like to announce that our nearly-two-year-old, previously known as Beatrix Joanna, will henceforth be called Clementine Joanna. We still like Beatrix better, but, you know, you can't have two B's in the same family, so something had to give."What a splendid combo, eh? And sibset pair! I want to know the other siblings names really bad.Anyway my friend Grace just texted me and said "Dorothy Adelaide wdyt" and I like it a lot, interesting unexpected balance of dark and light, and I asked her about Merit and she said "Too puritan. Imagine it being said in class." I disagree, I don't think it's puritan at all and it rocks in class.

Barnaby Merit is awesome. Poor little Beatrix/ Clemetine whose parents love her brothers name more than hers :-(Anyway, Merit is awesome. It has a really cool sound. The problem (for me, at least) is that in NZ the school qualifications whatever system marks you Achieved, Merit, Excellence. So I would rather give Excellence as a name :-DI like Dorothy Adelaide too.

I think it's puritan but [m]since when is puritan bad? all virtue names I think have puritan value in them.

Grace isn't Puritan. And no, virtue names do not all have Puritan value in them and yes, Puritan is bad - they were horrible people who created the witch hunts and other atrocities. The Puritan Ideal is not something to be aspired to. Christian value, maybe...Puritan no. When I think of Puritan names I think of things like Prudence, Silence, Patience. While they are admirable qualities the ideas the Puritans had behind them were not.

InterestingWhat's not puritan about Grace? Is it that it has widespread modern usage? I am pretty sure it was a traditional puritan staple.I don't exactly condone all things puritanical, but I don't think there's anything wrong with sharing names with them.

GraceI'm taking this off of something Cleveland Kent Evans stated a while ago, so I'll search it out or call my dad. The history of the name Grace is very different from what we think of it as today. And no...I don't think there is wrong with sharing names with them. My problem is more along the lines about assuming that every virtue name *is* Puritan or that the Puritans were something to be admired - they weren't. This comes from my own understanding, however, and is very much colored by Baptist history - we broke away from the Puritans because they were so brutal and violent and unwilling to accept any beliefs than their own. So I fully admit to having a very biased view of them. (And yes, there are two very different Baptist movements...the one I'm thinking of with the Puritans is more closely related to the Quaker movement)

Merit vs. MerritTake a look here: http://www.behindthename.com/bb/arcview.php?id=46436&board=genI haven't ever really thought of it as a male name, since I was introduced to as a female one. I think it's pretty cool, actually. I have a few concerns, mostly due to having an unusual word name myself. Still, though, Merit isn't as used as Haven is and as long as he stays out of the boy scouts (Merit! You earned a merit badge!) I can't see it having as much teasing potential as my name does. (I currently have a closetful of t-shrits from places like Hoagie Haven, Hamburger Haven, White Haven....people always think they're being so clever!)

Merit is really handsome, and Barnaby Merit is a great combo. But I wouldn't change a 2 year old's name! Though both combos they have for her are nice. I agree about Dorothy Adelaide, too. Good names all around in this post, but it's from you so I am not all that surprised. :)

love it a lotIt has familial significance to me because it is my mother's maiden name and my brother's second middle name. I would only spell it Merritt because that is how my family spells it. I would for sure use it someday and find it quite snappy and wonderful.Barnaby Merit is beyond handsome, wow.
