[Opinions] Gianni or Johnnie?
We are planning to name a daughter after my father. His name is John Albert. I love the name John, but it is too common for a boy, and I've always hated the name Albert. We've picked another name for a boy: Asher Theophilus, with Theophilus being an old family name on my side going back a few centuries. So for a girl, she'll be Gianna Albertine. My husband is Italian, and he really likes the name Gianna, and I strongly dislike the name Alberta, but love Albertine (I also found out Albertine is a favorite literary character of my father's from Proust), so this is how we arrived at this combination. The question is, we want to call her Johnnie for short (Johnnie Albertine, after my father John Albert), but we haven't decided on the spelling of the diminutive. Gianni to follow the traditional Italian name that would be her full name, or Johnnie. Both would be pronounced the same.Opinions, please?
Thanks in advance,
Rebecca

I wouldn't use Johnny/Johnnie as a full name. It's a nickname. How about John nn "Jack" or Jonathan?

I mean it only for a nickname. I'm asking for help in the spelling of the nickname when the full name is Gianna Albertine, but the name is in honor of my father, John Albert.Either Johnnie or Gianni, the full name either way has to be Gianna.I can't use Jack or Jonathan--they have different meanings, and this is for a girl.

Gianni would be much better imo. Gianna is such a georgous feminine name and personally I think Johnnie would ruin it.

I thinkGianni or Gianna may work. You didn't list Gianna, but I love the trad Italian way of making a female diminutive.

What do you mean I didn't list "Gianna"? That's the full name: Gianna Albertine. I am asking for help with the spelling for the nickname, either Gianni or Johnnie, since she will be named after my father, John Albert.*confused*

My guess would be that she meant Gianina, which btw is really cute.

I think Gianni looks a little more feminine written out. I'm also biased a little, since my husband's name is Johnny (legal name on the birth certificate...LOL) I think Gianna Albertine is very nice, and well thought out, and has a strong meaning for both of you. Bravo!

Thank you. :)It's still up in the air, since really Gianna and Gianni are diminutives for Giovanna and Giovanni, names that neither my husband or I like. I think that Gianni is a little more unique, but I also worry that it takes away from the namesake a little. My father's nickname as a small child was "Johnny," so I have that sound in my head... "Johnny Albert." At the same time, I don't want to veer too far from the child's real name.My daughter Charlotte was "Charlie" when she was very little, but it never stuck. There's a chance that the nickname for this one won't stick, either. After all, I've never been a "Becky." NEVER.
