I know the meaning of the name is disputed, but can anyone tell me which of the possible meanings of Katherine listed on this site is considered by name scholars to be most likely?

I'm quite sure the meaning of Katherine (and its variants) is "pure."

From what's written here and elsewhere I'd actually take "pure" to be the least likely to be correct. It's clear it was associated with that meaning later, but that is not the original meaning.

Pure has more or less been discounted.
