I've just had a debate with BBH about the name Chantal.
Personally, I don't like, in fact I hate it.

Depends on how you pronounce it. Where I live, the default prn is shon-TEL, and it's kinda trashy, up there with Charmaine, etc. But if you say it shon-TAHL it sounds kind of gorgeous. But because nobody pronounces it like that, I'm going to go with 'not a fan'.

I did not pick my name, my mother did. So if you want to get into that fight take it up with her. I am more than aware that my name is often that of a stripper or someone else who is trashy. However; that is not who I am. Just because general opinion says something about a name does not mean it is true for every person with that name. I know, have known, or have met plenty of girls with each of the names I have included, and although not all of them have the personality traits their names draw in my head it doesn't stop me from thinking that about the names. And just because I am not a trashy person doesn't stop people from assuming things based upon my name (plenty of my friends like to joke with me about how if I ever enter the adult entertainment business I wouldn't have to change my name). I am sure there are plenty of trashy people named Charlotte, Elizabeth, or Sophia but it doesn't stop me from thinking of those names as classy.

I think it's one of those names that can either be gorgeous or totally trashy a lot of French names are that way. I dislike the sound personally, but I think it can work for some people. Too often it's used by lower-class people who fail to give their children a proper upbringing, though not for lack of trying and so the name ends up becoming trashy in people's minds to reflects those they remember it being bestowed upon.

I like it! Sounds a bit stuck uppish but I still like it. Seems like her sister should be Bianca.

It's not my style but pronounced the French way (and preferably used by French people) there's definitely nothing wrong with it. I had a French instructor (from France) named Chantal. She was a very sophisticated lady. I don't like the whole Chantal-chant-chanter- thing though.

I hate it, too. To me, it sounds like the parents were trying way too hard to come across as polished and sophisticated.

I hate it.... I used to know a girl called Chantelle ... very up herself. Auditioned to be in S Club 8! No callback of course, since she can't sing.

It seems very dated to me. In the US, I'd associate it with someone who is rather low-class.
