Edward has never been a favorite of mine, just never have liked the sound of it. And the one time that I used it for a story, I gave the character the nickname "Ward" (pro. like "Word". Why, I don't know, but I like that better than "Ed", "Edd", "Eddie", etc.) And I honestly felt sorry for an acquaintance/friend of mine who had Edward as a middle name.
But because of Chronicles of Narnia (been a fan since I could listen to a story, my mom is a MAJOR C.S. Lewis fan, so we always had his books around), I've always prefered Edmund to Edward.
I would keep it as a middle name.
