It's 100% nickname for me. It's what my aunt's doorman's son (are you following) is called, but his real name's Constantino, I think.

In Italy it's used by adults as well, but they're all bound to have a more formal official name.

The only Nino I know is a German Ninotschka, so it's female for me. I'm not very fond of it, but it's okay.

My mom had a student in her class named Nino. He and his twin brother were adorable, but they were both terrors. I still like the name and I think Amélie helped to neutralize the negative association I had with it before. I prefer it for boys.
