It is 1920.
The past five years were filled with ups and downs for the Montgomery family. In 1917, Kenny was shot during an attempt to stop a robbery. He was off-duty, but still felt it his responsibility to protect the citizens of San Francisco. The family was devastated by Kenny's death, and it took a year and a half for life to return to some semblance of normalcy. Clara began taking in sewing jobs to help make ends meet.
Alice decided, in 1919, to marry a childhood friend who could provide a steady income, though not the life of luxury she'd always dreamed of. Alice and Edward were surprised to learn that they were expecting a baby, and on August 9, 1920, their first child was born. David Edward Smith is a healthy, happy little boy. Alice is sad that her father did not live to see his first grandson, but she takes great delight in raising her little boy.
Henry wanted very much to join the war effort, though by the time he turned 18, the fighting was over. Instead, Henry has moved across the country to New York City, where he currently serves in the mounted police force. Henry enjoys his job and sends as much money home as he can, since he knows that its hard to live on Alice's meager earnings.
Andy is planning on moving out to New York to live with Henry once he turns eighteen and can get a job in law enforcement. Despite Kenny's death, Andy still wants to work on the front lines and eventually earn a spot in a secret law agency--perhaps in the FBI. Andy works odd jobs whenever he isn't in school.
Joey is fifteen. He works in a local grocery store in the afternoons and earns a good bit of money. He doesn't think he'll be a baseball player anymore, but still loves to play sports in his free time.
Matthew and William are growing up quickly. They were probably the hardest hit by the loss of their father. William was only three when it happened, and already he is forgetting. Matthew is rambunctious and headstrong, and Clara has a difficult time controlling him. Andy can usually keep him in line, however.
